I was new the to field then. I was surprised to hear another supervisor say, "Borderline is a diagnosis for people we don't like." I bought my copy more than ten years ago and I still refer to it from time to time. I read my supervisor's copy while working nights at a crisis center. Using what I learned from this book, I learned to like working with persons who had Borderline Personality Disorder.
It is a defining text. I am surprised that another, smaller less-repetivie edition has not been released.
I wonder if that is her taking her own advice and doing what works rather than doing what is right. ML recons that people with BPD do not lie.
One observation. ML calls people "patients", rather than "clients".
This book realy helps incrase one's empathy to those with BPD. On the other hand, gosh, it could do with some editing.
Well, that's ML lying, or making a mistake. One question.
Marsha Linehan is clearly an expert and presents her treatment for a very complicated and dynamic disorder in this well-written, well-supported book. Dr. Organized, clear, and direct, this text provides clinicians with fantastic information and guidance in treating this troubled population.
Its style and its simple and common sense contents are one of its strengths. This is one of the most helpful book y never read about psychoterapy (of course the better I know about treating borderline personality disorder). Essential.
I've used some of these skills/techniques with patients who have some of these traits but not BPD - there are great strategies for Behavior Analysis and determining intervention strategies, not to mention validation techniques. You should also buy the Skills Manual since there are references to it. There are actually on-line courses at Behavioral Tech (Marsha Linehan's Institute) where you can learn on an interactive site, as well. What can I say. If you're going to learn Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for BPD- you have to have this text. On the other hand - if you are going to treat BPD - make sure to also have a clinical supervisor - it's a very complex population.
